This document contains the words, lyrics, and music to the traditional patriotic song, "My Country 'Tis of Thee." You can view the music or download the individual parts arranged for standard concert band instrumentation.

Prior to the acceptance of "The Star Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States, "My Country Tis of Thee" was widely regarded as the national anthem throughout the late 1800's. The song is based on the national anthem of Great Britain, "God Save the Queen" , but uses lyrics written by Rev. Samuel Francis Smith in 1831.

From a musical standpoint this song is useful for teaching several musical concepts. My Country Tis of Thee has tied notes in measure two and four. Other useful concepts include 3/4 time, dotted half notes, and repeat signs.

My Country Tis Of TheeMy Country Tis Of Thee

The Lyrics (Words) To "My Country Tis of Thee"

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

My father's God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.
