Tales From The Podium

The personal weblog of Chad Criswell, MusicEdMagic Webmaster.

Paradise Burning

Avalon Harbor on Catalina IslandI hadn't intended to post a blog article today. In fact, today marked the opening day of the annual Iowa Bandmaster's Convention in Des Moines and I had hoped to let the next few days recharge my mental batteries and return with a renewed stack of ideas to share with all of you. Things changed a bit as I listened to the news on the way home.

Patriotic Sheet Music Available

American FlagThe Fourth Of July is just around the corner, and with it come thoughts of the patriotic music that we have all grown up with to celebrate the birth of our country. Over the past several months I have been working to create a series of sheet music collections to allow music students on any instrument to play the most often requested of these patriotic standards. All of these pieces of traditional patriotic music are written to be playable by any musician, including beginners. Parts are included in Adobe PDF and in Sibelius SIB formats. For each of the pieces you can view a copy of the full conductor's score and listen to it as well using the free Sibelius Scorch plug-in.

Free Trumpet Sheet Music: Where To Find It

Sheet MusicThere are dozens of web sites that allow you to download free sheet music, but only a select few offer downloads specifically for individual instruments such as the trumpet. The selection is further limited by the fact that in order for the sheet music to be offered for free, either it has to be out of copyright or the copyright holder must offer it for free of his own free will. In the case of the trumpet, good quality free sheet music is more difficult to come by than music for more popular instruments such as guitar or piano. In other words, with free sheet music you get what you pay for. Be ready for the fact that in a majority of cases the variety of music available for the trumpet will be very limited in terms of titles and in some cases the actual quality of the printed music itself may be less than ideal.
