Remember that the Star Spangled Banner is NOT A FUNERAL MARCH!  Most professional conductors agree that our national anthem should be played at a fairly brisk tempo and with a proud, bold quality to the music.  Also pay attention to where your ensemble takes breaths at.  The natural places that students breathe are not necessarily the correct ones when taking into account the lyrics of the song.
